Watch: Standard vs EFB vs AGM explained
A one-minute guide to the three battery types and which one your vehicle needs.
Read the summary
Standard flooded
Lead plates sit in liquid electrolyte. These batteries provide everyday starting for cars without start-stop and with basic electrics. They are not designed for frequent start-stop use or deep, repeated cycling.
EFB — Enhanced Flooded Battery
Reinforced plates, carbon additives and a polyester scrim support longer plate life. EFB handles frequent restarts, with better charge acceptance and cycling than a Standard battery, for entry-level start-stop vehicles.
AGM — Absorbent Glass Mat
Glass-fibre mats hold the electrolyte between tightly packed plates. Sealed, spill-resistant AGM batteries support heavier cycling, advanced start-stop and brake energy recovery. They are usually the most expensive of the three types.
Which do I need?
The film compares cycling, charge acceptance, start-stop suitability and cost. Do not downgrade AGM to EFB or EFB to Standard. Many start-stop cars need the replacement battery registered after fitting. Always check the vehicle’s requirements; performance varies by manufacturer, size and vehicle.
