A one-minute guide to what each system does, and which one you need.
A UPS sits between the mains and your equipment. Its battery takes over instantly in a power cut, providing short-term backup so you can save work, shut down safely or start a generator. Examples include servers, tills, telecoms, medical and security equipment.
A battery energy storage system stores solar energy or cheaper off-peak electricity for later. It can power a home or business in the evening and at peak-price times, use more of your own solar and support EV charging.
A UPS focuses on backup and protection, and is sized by power in kVA. Energy storage charges and discharges for everyday use, and is sized by stored energy in kWh. Many storage systems also offer backup. Specifications vary by product and installation.
UPS means protection for critical equipment during a power cut. Energy storage means storing energy for daily use. Many businesses use both: energy storage for everyday energy and a UPS for critical equipment. Sodium-ion & lithium-ion energy storage, supplied to UK homes & businesses.
